Is this happening for you since Timeline?
Things to ask your “social media expert”…“Do you understand the culture?”
If you or the person running your social media does not understand the culture, you stand out online…and no, not stand out in a good way. Social media marketing is trans-generational, but it was built by Millennials who established the culture. So although we market to every type of demographic and age group, there is something called “Twitterquette” and Facebook, Youtube “netiquette.” If you don’t know these do’s and don’t’s and understand the culture, you can unknowingly appear as spam or even offend potential clients or loyal followers.
Speaking of the culture, an important thing to know is that the culture of Twitter is different than that of Facebook. Facebook’s culture is different than LinkedIn. YouTube is it’s own monster altogether!
Like we stated in a previous blog and video on automation, there are some things that belong on Twitter and some on Facebook. You want to be sure you are keeping in the right culture for the right profile so you and your brand are represented well to clients, potential clients, fans, etc.

Why isn’t your social media marketing campaign working? If you are missing one of these three components, you will not get the results you need to reach your sales or branding goals.
We look at campaigns daily to evaluate why they aren’t working. Why are sales not up? Why are there no more followers or Likes? Why aren’t the company’s or individual’s goals being met? It always comes down to one of the three key components missing. Either there is a good foundation but not strategic messaging and growth. Or there is the right messaging and growth but the foundation was not setup correctly or optimized.
If your social media campaign is not bringing you new business, not increasing your brand presence…not increasing your bottom-line… then there is something wrong with the strategy of either your foundation, messaging or growth plan. We can evaluate this for you and show you what you need to change, so if you are stuck then checkout our Mastery Training Programs beginning at the first of the year.

More things to ask your social media expert…”are you making use of #hashtags and #trendingtopics?” And maybe more importantly, are you making proper use of them? The last thing you want is to be one of “those” people, who are misusing #hashtags by trying to #hashtag #every #word #of #your #tweets! If you are doing this, or your “guru” is doing it for you, then you or he/she simply does not understand the way #hashtags work in Twitterland. We will be covering hashtag use in depth during the KISS Training Academy.
Trending topics sometimes include hashtags, sometimes don’t. A company or brand will want to make a very strategic use of trending topics, being much more careful than if you are just using Twitter for your personal brand/use. But taking the time to checkout the trending topics and use them in a way that keeps within your persona will be extremely useful to you and introduce you to a whole new audience.
Checkout our video on trending topics, and enroll in the KISS Training Academy for an upcoming in-depth look at trending topic and hashtag use!

MYTHBUSTER #3: Automation is one of those things that can be terrific or horrific. It can be GREAT for your marketing campaign…or can destroy it. It ‘s like snow…or broccoli…or Robin Williams…when used in the right setting and context it is thoroughly enjoyable to all, but when overused…let’s just say too much of a good thing.
The right purpose for social media automation is to save time and give better strategy to your postings via scheduling. We use tools like Hootsuite or Tweetdeck to make sure tweets and Facebook posts go out on a strategic schedule and to save ourselves a lot of time and our clients money. But there are those out there in the world of “experts” that will tell you to link your Twitter to Facebook so that you do one tweet and it covers it all…and that sounds so nice and easy and is great, until your Facebook friends and fans see hashtags and @mentions in your posts! Not to mention the fact that the language we use on Twitter is much more casual and of the “texting culture” than the Facebook crowd.
We will be diving into more detail of what IS cool to automate and what is NOT cool to automate in our Training Academy. The first session starts November 30th and we’ve got a great promo going to enroll, so check it out soon. If you are reading this AFTER Nov. 30th, not to worry, you can enroll in the Training Academy at ANY time and back-track to the stuff you missed, it is all recorded and we will send you the tutorials too.
Have a GREAT Thanksgiving and now GO UNLINK your Twitter to Facebook so that your family and friends don’t see a nice #HappyThanksgiving on their Wall and think you are weird.

MYTHBUSTER #2: When you talk to a social media expert, guru or company that says they will make you go viral…simply turn and run! We’re here to reveal an important truth – NO ONE can make you go viral. Sorry. I know it is disappointing – and you may really, really WANT to believe the sweet-talking salesperson who tempts you with the vision of 100 million views on Youtube and a Facebook and Twitter presence that rivals that of Lady Gaga. But $8,000+ later…you will have lost $8,000+ and will more than likely not have gained one follower.
Now this doesn’t mean that all people selling social media services and claiming they can make you go viral are crooks. It is very possible they are just not educated on social media or online marketing; or, they have been wrongly instructed by some other “expert.” We strongly recommend to those who have good intentions to be careful to not misrepresent yourself – taking a seminar and hearing about social media and online marketing is one thing, but successfully completing a marketing campaign is another.
But it’s not all hopeless… here’s what CAN be done! When all the components are there and being done strategically and correctly, you CAN build a buzz around your business! You CAN reach a targeted and new audience, you CAN increase sales and referrals, you CAN get people in your industry talking about you; you CAN greatly increase followers, Likers, subscribers, etc. There is a strategy and a way to create a big buzz…to set and achieve realistic goals.
We will be covering the viral topic, what to watch out for when it comes to marketing scams, what is and isn’t realistic, strategy, buzz-creating and more in the coming weeks and months in our KISS Training Academy. The first webinar is free, it is an introduction to the academy and special KISS presentation about social media marketing “Never Underestimate the Power of a Tweet!”

We at KISS have decided to make this our new mantra, to the puzzlement of many! But once you watch the video and read on you will understand why…
“Social media expert” and “guru” has become the title of choice for almost anyone who knows how to setup a Facebook page in recent months. “Experts” in online marketing convince the unknowing to fork over thousands of dollars by making grandiose claims without a track record to back it up. But if you don’t understand social media, it is easy to believe the great sales pitches and scams that are out there…and we hear one horror story after another, every day!
Beware of the following: Just because someone may know the mechanics of how to use social media and all the right tools, DOESN’T mean they understand marketing, branding and how to create a truly successful campaign to achieve exact marketing goals! Much of our work with new clients is first spent cleaning up the online branding wreckage the “guru” made of things.
So, because of the integrity crisis in the online marketing industry we have chosen to steer clear of this tainted term and at the same time roll out a new e-learning academy and video series to help educate and prevent further social media catastrophes…it is called the MythBusters Series! Look for upcoming “questions to ask your ‘social media expert’” and “You Might Not Be a Social Media Expert IF…” videos and also register for our new training academy, starting up soon!

| Late last week we were reminded once again how quickly the world of social media marketing changes. The K.I.S.S. Team and hundreds of other social media marketing companies and individuals who manage their own campaigns, logged into Hootsuite to manage and schedule posts just to find the “Pending Messages” stream gone! For non-hoot-users, the “Pending Message” stream is where you can see what tweets and posts you have scheduled for that particular account. Hootsuite customers began hitting the Hootsuite Facebook and Twitter right away, as hundreds of campaigns were disrupted. It turns out that Hootsuite, without notifying any of their customers, decided to change the way messages are scheduled to make it more convenient for everyone…though it didn’t seem too convenient at the time! We started receiving emails from our training clients the same day – “What happened to my scheduled messages?!” Hootsuite has now brought back the pending tweets column, just yesterday… a solution they say “to please everyone.” Let us know if you have any questions.
Just another lesson in how this whole thing can change on a daily basis….and why we are continually updating our training materials! |
There was a surge in social media activity 12 hours prior to the Super Bowl which was a remarkable increase from last year’s early buzz. Not only were companies and branding competing for attention on the multi-million dollar ads during the Super Bowl, but Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and the rest were lighting up with promoted tweets, YouTube’s Super Bowl ad voting contest, and much more! The ads that got the most YouTube and Twitter action have been featured today on news channels and media of all types. The little boy in the much tweeted about Darth Vader ad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R55e-uHQna0) was interviewed on MSNBC this morning, and the Eminem Detroit commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKL254Y_jtc) has stirred things up all over the political blogs and news shows today, with political commentators going at it.
But what good is all this buzz for the small or growing business? You can ride the waves of the buzz and take some lessons from the big guys. A little good branding and marketing in the Twitter world may not land your business on the top stories of CNN, but you will see obvious effects and results. Social media marketing is not like traditional marketing – you have to be clever, you have to make it fun and informative AND relevant – but in doing so you will reap the rewards of dedicated followers, customers and people who will refer you to their friends…and those friends to their friends…and so on. Send us and email and checkout our website for ways we can create the buzz you need for your business – we have increased our client’s Twitter following by 900% in 10 days and we can also tweet for you or make recommendations on how you should be tweeting.
Here are some great stats and informative articles about the Super Bowl social media and ad buzz, and also checkout the #brandbowl trending topic hashtag on Twitter, where there was loads of discussion on the branding and marketing side of things as they were happening – by professionals and viewers.
